If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or gum disease, getting treatment as soon as possible is vital to ensuring oral health and wellness over time. Once this condition develops, it can only be managed, not cured. Working with an experienced dental professional to achieve a healthier smile is critical to ensuring the smile stays healthy.
At Neal Edwards DDS of Riverside, California, we are dedicated to providing patients solutions to help them achieve and maintain oral health, even after infection has occurred. For many, routine periodontal dental cleanings are vital to maintaining gum tissue, bone, and teeth.
When periodontal disease is diagnosed, a periodontal professional teeth cleaning may be recommended by your dentist. Also known as scaling and root planing, this procedure is a deeper cleaning that goes beyond the typical teeth cleaning performed during regular dental check-ups. This process removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths rough spots on the tooth root to help prevent future build-up.
Routine periodontal dental cleanings are critical to preventing and managing gum disease. These cleanings remove built-up plaque and tartar, which lead to infection if left untreated. They also allow Dr. Neal Edwards to monitor the health of your gums and identify any potential issues before they become more serious.
While periodontal cleanings are a critical part of managing periodontal disease, they may not completely address the infection on their own. Depending on the severity of the actual infection, additional treatments such as antibiotics or surgical interventions may be necessary to fully eradicate the bacteria causing it. Dr. Neal Edwards works with you to determine the best course of treatment for your specific case. This may include antibiotic treatments directly in the mouth or oral antibiotics to control the infection from within.
Whether you need a simple, routine prophylaxis or a scaling and root planing, our Riverside, California team can assist.
